  • Need a Sperm Donor?

For some people, the use of donor sperm is the only option for creating a family. The Nairobi IVF donor sperm program offers treatment using either clinic-recruited donor sperm (where the sperm donor has been recruited by Nairobi IVF), or recipient-recruited donor sperm (where the recipient couple/woman has provided their own sperm donor).

Who can be a sperm donor?
Healthy men between 21 and 45 years of age may be recruited by Nairobi IVF as clinic donors. Known sperm donors are assessed for suitability on an individual basis.

Who can use donated sperm?
Treatment with donor sperm may be required to help you achieve your dream of having a baby if you are a:

> Single woman, or
> Heterosexual couple with severe male factor infertility (usually total absence of sperm production) or a history of serious genetic or medical disorder.

Treatment options using donor sperm:
Treatment with donor sperm may be by intrauterine insemination (IUI) or IVF with Intracytoplasmic Sperm Injection (ICSI). The recommended treatment will depend on your circumstances, the quality and amount of sperm available for use, and any previous treatments.

The IUI procedure involves insertion of sperm through the cervix at the time of the woman’s ovulation. When using donor sperm the frozen sperm sample will be thawed just prior to the IUI procedure.

IVF using donor sperm is recommended if IUI treatment has not resulted in pregnancy, where the sperm quality is inadequate for IUI, where there is only a small amount of suitable sperm stored, or otherwise where medically indicated.

All IVF cycles using clinic-recruited donor sperm involve the use of IVF with Intracytoplasmic Sperm Injection (ICSI)
Find out more about the process for sperm donors
If you wish to use a sperm donor to help you conceive, and whether you have your own sperm donor or require a clinic-recruited donor, contact our Public Liaison Coordinator on
+254 20 2731982 or via our website.

Treatment with donor sperm (IUI or IVF) requires a referral from your GP and a series of appointments.
If you decide to access sperm through our clinic recruited Donor Programme, you will be given access to the Nairobi IVF website which holds a database of all the donors that are currently available to choose from.

You can view each Donor’s profile and a range of other attributes such as their hair colour, nationality, height, and occupation. You can also view questionnaires that have been completed by the donors about themselves and their family, and a message about why they have decided to make this altruistic gift.

Once you have had one child using a de-identified sperm donor, we will endeavour to assist you in having further children with the same donor by retaining sufficient samples to ensure future access.

Fertility specialist appointment
During an appointment with your Nairobi IVF fertility specialist you will undergo a medical evaluation to assess any factors influencing your fertility and to determine the appropriate treatment for you. Your fertility specialist will discuss the necessary screening tests and sign the required treatment consent forms with you.

Counselling appointments
Women and couples using donor sperm are required to attend a minimum of two sessions with a Nairobi IVF counsellor to discuss the social and legal issues around donor-conceived families.

Sperm donors (and their partner, where applicable), whether clinic-recruited or recipient-recruited, are also required to attend a minimum of two counselling sessions with a Nairobi IVF counsellor to discuss the social and legal issues around donor-conceived families.

All parties – recipients, donors and partners, where applicable –will need to sign detailed consent forms regarding the use of donor sperm before treatment may commence.

If the donor is known to the recipient, a joint counselling session may be scheduled.

Nursing information session
We will organise an information session for you with a nurse to discuss the process in detail prior to commencing it.

For recipients accessing our clinic recruited program the donor team will arrange your access to the donor sperm profiles through our donor portal once all counselling and medical requirements are complete.
